The Extended Look sold consoles: PS5 up 33%, Xbox up 34% in a week

A trailer moving hardware is not new. A trailer moving hardware for a game that runs on both platforms, two months before launch, is a different signal.

UK console sales jumped in the week after Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, with PS5 up 33% and Xbox Series X/S up 34% according to figures circulating this week.

Both numbers rising by almost exactly the same amount is the interesting part.

Why that symmetry matters

When a platform exclusive drives hardware, one line goes up and the other does not. That is the entire logic of an exclusive. Here the two lines moved together within a percentage point of each other, which tells you the purchase was not about picking a side. People were buying a machine, any machine, that will run this game in November.

That is a rarer event than it sounds. It requires a game that is genuinely platform-agnostic in the public mind, and an audience large enough that the people who do not currently own a current-generation console are still a meaningful market nine years into the PS5 and Xbox Series generation.

The install base problem Rockstar has

Grand Theft Auto V sold to an audience that had had years to buy the hardware. Grand Theft Auto 6 launches into a generation where a large number of people never upgraded, partly because of the shortages that ran through 2020 and 2021 and partly because there was not much reason to.

Rockstar needs those people to buy a console before they can buy the game. A 33% week is what the start of that looks like.

What to watch

The week to actually watch is the one containing 12 November, when pre-loading opens, and the one containing 19 November itself. UK weekly hardware figures around those dates will show whether this was an early wave or the beginning of a sustained run. A single strong week after a major trailer is normal. Three months of them would be the story.

Treat the specific percentages as reported rather than audited. Weekly UK hardware numbers come from trade sources and get revised.
