How big is GTA 6? Nobody has the real number yet, and the one going round is fake

No store listing shows an install size. The 676.7 GB screenshot was doctored. Here is what the numbers we do have say about how much space to clear before preload opens on 12 November.

A month out, Grand Theft Auto 6 does not have a published install size. Rockstar has not given one, and neither the PlayStation Store nor the Xbox Store shows one. The Xbox listing currently carries a placeholder of a few hundred megabytes, which is the store page, not the game.

So every number you see today is a guess. Some are reasonable. One is a hoax.

The 676.7 GB screenshot

This is the one that keeps coming back. It is an image of an Xbox Store page listing GTA 6 at 676.7 GB, first posted on Christmas Eve 2025, and it is doctored. The tell is in the image itself: it lists Xbox One as a platform, and GTA 6 is not coming to Xbox One. A game that size would also not fit on a standard PS5 at all, which is not a decision any publisher makes.

What we can actually reason from

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 needed a little over 100 GB on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018. That was a last-generation game with a smaller map, on consoles with slow hard drives, where games often stored data more than once just to load it faster.
  • The current consoles decompress in hardware. PS5 and Xbox Series machines are built to stream compressed assets fast, which is part of why their games have not grown as quickly as many people expected.
  • There is no disc to fit. The physical edition ships as a download code, so Rockstar is not constrained by a 100 GB Blu-ray either way.

Put together, most estimates land between about 150 and 200 GB for the base game on PS5 and Series X, with a day-one patch on top. That range is plausible. It is still an estimate, and we would not plan around the top of it as if it were a ceiling.

How much room you actually have

The advertised size of a console's drive is not what you get to use.

  • PS5 (825 GB): about 667 GB usable.
  • Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB usable.
  • Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB usable. This is the one to worry about. A 200 GB game takes more than half of it.

What to do before 12 November

Preloading opens a week before launch. If you want it to finish overnight rather than fail at 80 percent, clear 250 GB now. That covers the high end of the estimates plus a patch, and if the real figure is smaller you have lost nothing.

If your console is already full, our SSD guide covers which drives work in a PS5 and when deleting old games is cheaper than buying one. On Series S, check whether any of your installed games are already on an external drive, since you can move them back later.

What is not known

The real install size on any platform. Whether the Series S version is meaningfully smaller, as it has been for other games. And the size of the day-one patch, which for a game this size could be large. This page will be updated with the store figures the moment they appear.
