The GTA 6 physical edition has no disc, and preloading starts 12 November
A box with a download code in it. Here is what that actually means for you, including the 150 to 200GB you need to clear.

The physical edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 does not contain a disc. It contains a box with a download code inside it.
Preloading opens on 12 November at midnight local time, a week before the 19 November release, for both digital pre-orders and physical buyers.
What this means in practice
- You need the storage either way. Estimates put the download at 150 to 200GB, though Rockstar has not published a figure. Clear the space before 12 November, not on the night.
- You need an internet connection to install. There is no offline install path from a disc.
- The physical copy is not resellable in the normal way. A download code is consumed on redemption. The second-hand market for this game will effectively not exist.
- Physical editions ship on 12 November, or are available for collection from retailers that day, so a code-in-box buyer can preload alongside digital buyers rather than a week behind.

Why Rockstar has done this
A modern Blu-ray disc holds 100GB. A game estimated at 150 to 200GB does not fit on one, and a multi-disc physical release is both expensive and unpopular. Once the install is going to be a full download regardless, the disc stops doing anything except adding cost.
That is the practical reason. The commercial reason sitting behind it is that a code-in-box release removes the second-hand market entirely, and a used copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 would otherwise have been one of the most traded items in games retail for years.
Both things are true at once. It is worth being clear-eyed that the convenience argument and the revenue argument point the same direction here.
If you want something physical
Buy the physical edition for the box and the contents, not for the medium. You are buying packaging and whatever is printed inside it, plus a code that becomes worthless the moment you use it. That is a fine thing to want. Just know that is the transaction.
Practical checklist for 12 November
- Clear at least 200GB now, and more if you plan to keep other large games installed
- If you are on an external drive, remember the game will need to sit on internal storage to run
- Preloading starts at midnight local time, so the queue pressure will hit different regions at different hours
- Redeem a code-in-box the moment you have it, since a lost code is a lost game
