GTA 6 makes The Game Awards cutoff by about a day. That does not make it a nominee
The window closes at 9pm Pacific on 20 November. GTA 6 is out on the 19th. The jury that picks the nominees will vote before almost anyone outside it has played it.

The Game Awards have published their 2026 rules, and the line everyone went looking for is there. To be eligible, a game has to be commercially available on or before Friday 20 November 2026, at 9pm Pacific. GTA 6 unlocks on 19 November. It is in, with roughly a day to spare.
The show itself is on Thursday 10 December at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Players' Voice, the fan vote, has a later deadline of 30 November.
Eligible is the easy part
Nominations for nearly every category are chosen by a jury of more than a hundred media and creator outlets. Each submits a confidential, unranked ballot of its top five, and the five games that appear on the most ballots are the nominees.
That is where the timing bites. The nominee list for a December show is normally announced in the middle of November, which means the ballots are in before or right around launch. A juror voting GTA 6 into Game of the Year would, in most cases, be voting for a game they have played for a few days at most, and possibly not at all.
Whether that happens depends almost entirely on when review copies go out. If the reports of copies before the end of October are right, the outlets on the jury will have had three weeks with it by the time they vote. If Rockstar keeps codes back until close to launch, a lot of ballots get cast on trailers and reputation, which is not a position most outlets will want to defend in print.
Has this happened before
Late launches do get nominated. Red Dead Redemption 2 came out on 26 October 2018 and was nominated for Game of the Year that December, losing to God of War. But four weeks of play is a very different thing from one day.
Players' Voice is the safer bet
The fan vote closes ten days later and is decided by a public poll, not a jury. Given the size of the audience, GTA 6 being on that list would be less a question than a formality. Whether that is a good look for an award that also has a jury category for the same game is another matter.
What is not known
The date nominees are announced this year, which the FAQ does not give. Whether jury outlets will have review code before they vote. And whether Rockstar wants to be in the race at all: it does not campaign for these, and it has never needed to.
