What time does GTA 6 unlock where you are?
Midnight local time on 19 November, which means the whole world does not start together. Here is what that means for you.
Last updated

Grand Theft Auto 6 unlocks at midnight local time on Thursday 19 November 2026.
That is the important detail and it is easy to skim past. It is not a single global moment. It is a rolling unlock that follows midnight around the planet, which means New Zealand is playing while most of Europe is still at work on Wednesday.
Roughly when it lands
Because it is local midnight, the answer for you is simply *midnight on Wednesday night into Thursday*. Where it gets interesting is the order:
- New Zealand and eastern Australia go first, roughly 13 hours ahead of UK time
- Japan and Korea follow a few hours later
- Continental Europe and the UK are next
- US Eastern is five hours behind the UK, Pacific eight
So by the time the US west coast starts, the game has been out for the best part of a day somewhere.
The consequence nobody plans for
Spoilers. A rolling unlock means the opening hours of the story will be on social media before large parts of the world can start playing.
If that bothers you, mute the obvious terms before you go to bed on the 18th rather than after you wake up on the 19th. Muting GTA 6, GTA VI, Jason and Lucia covers most of it.

Preload first
Preloading opens on 12 November, a full week ahead. Estimates put the download at 150 to 200GB, though Rockstar has not published a figure.
Do not leave this to launch night. A 200GB download on a domestic connection is a multi-hour job, and every other person on your street is doing the same thing at the same time. The whole point of a week-long preload window is that you are not downloading at midnight.
The physical edition does not contain a disc, only a code, so physical buyers are downloading too. Boxes ship on 12 November so that code-in-box buyers can preload alongside everybody else.
The checklist
- Clear at least 200GB of internal storage now
- Preload from 12 November, not the night before
- Redeem a code-in-box the moment it arrives
- Mute the spoiler terms before bed on the 18th
- Remember it is midnight local, so there is no point sitting up for a US time if you are not in the US
Our countdown page runs against the release date in your own timezone.

Where to buy
Make room before 12 November
Estimates put the download at 150 to 200GB and it has to live on internal storage to run. A base PS5 has about 667GB usable, so one or two other big games is all it takes to be short.
Needed before preload opens on 12 November
- Amazon: Must be an M.2 NVMe with a heatsink. A bare drive will not fit the bay.
- Amazon: Xbox uses a proprietary card rather than a standard drive.
