Wildlife

Rockstar describes a large amount of wildlife across land, air and water, native and non native. The non native half is the part that shows somebody researched Florida rather than looked at it.

Rockstar's framing of the wildlife in Grand Theft Auto 6 is a staggering amount of it, across the land, the air and the water, and native and non native species. Two of those words are doing far more work than the rest.

Why non native is the real detail

Florida's defining ecological story is invasive species. Burmese pythons in the Everglades, green iguanas on sea walls, lionfish on the reefs, walking catfish, Cuban tree frogs, feral hogs. It is the subject Florida wildlife agencies spend most of their budget on, and it is the thing about that environment that a studio would only put in a game if somebody had actually read about the place.

A system that distinguishes native from non native is not a longer animal list. It is a model of an ecosystem under pressure, and the pressure is the interesting part.

The iguana at the top of this page is the clearest published example. Green iguanas are not native to Florida, they are established across the south of the state, they reach exactly that size, and they sit on exactly that kind of rock.

What has been shown

Across Rockstar's own press stills and the twelve screenshots in issue 382:

  • Land. A Florida panther wading a creek in Mount Kalaga with four deer on the bank behind it. Deer drinking at the water's edge. Alligators, both in the water and dead on an airboat deck.
  • Air. Cranes and egrets in the marshes, birds over the Keys, gulls on the beaches, and birds in flight in the background of a large share of the outdoor shots.
  • Water. Sea turtles, rays and dolphins in the diving and fishing footage, and fish visible through clear water in the Keys.

Ambient, not encounters

The consistent quality of the published images is that the animals are not events. A fishing camp screenshot in issue 382 puts three alligators in the water about two metres from a man standing on the dock, and neither the man nor the alligators are reacting to each other. In the Grassrivers chase above, alligators are simply in the shot.

That is how it works in the places these are drawn from, and it is a harder thing to build than an encounter, because it has to keep running when nothing is happening.

The precedent, and the reason to be careful with it

Red Dead Redemption 2 modelled around two hundred species with individual behaviour, pelt quality tied to how cleanly you killed them, and carcasses that degraded over a ride. It is still the most detailed animal simulation in a video game, and Rockstar built it.

Whether the whole apparatus comes to a modern setting is a separate question, and there is a reasonable case that it should not. Skinning and pelt grades make sense in 1899. In 2026 Florida, nuisance and invasive control under permit makes more sense than sport, which is also what hunting in this state largely is.

What is not known

  • Whether non native species behave differently from native ones, or whether the distinction is a label on a list
  • Whether any of it is tied to a mechanic, a permit, a bounty or a mission, or is purely ambient
  • Whether animals have territories, routines or predator and prey relationships, or spawn near the player
  • How many species there are. Rockstar has said a staggering amount and has not said a number
  • Whether pythons appear at all, which is the single most obvious Florida invasive and has never been shown

Everything above is read off published imagery and Rockstar's own description. None of it has been played.
