The GTA 6 launch checklist
Storage, preload, unlock time and the spoiler problem. Everything worth sorting before 19 November, in the order it matters.

Grand Theft Auto 6 unlocks at midnight local time on Thursday 19 November 2026, with preloading from 12 November. Most of what goes wrong on a launch night is decided a week earlier, so this is the list in the order that actually matters.
1. Clear the storage, today
This is the one that catches people, and it is the only item here with a real deadline attached.
Estimates put the download at 150 to 200GB. Rockstar has not published a figure, so treat that as the working number rather than a fact. A base PlayStation 5 ships with about 667GB usable, and if you have Call of Duty installed you have already lost a third of it.
The game has to sit on internal storage to run. An external USB drive can hold it, but a PlayStation 5 will not launch a PS5 game from one, so it is archive space rather than play space. What you need is either a lot of deleting or an internal expansion.
Check yours now: Settings, then Storage. If you are under 250GB free, decide this week rather than on the 12th.

2. Preload from 12 November
A full week ahead, which is deliberate on Rockstar's part. Do not leave a 200GB download to launch night, when every other person on your street is pulling the same file.
The physical edition contains a code, not a disc, so box buyers are downloading too. Boxes ship on the 12th precisely so code-in-box buyers can preload alongside everyone else. Redeem it the day it lands.
3. Know your unlock time
Midnight local, which means the world does not start together. New Zealand goes roughly 13 hours before the UK, and the US west coast is last.
There is no point sitting up for an American time if you are not in America. Our unlock time guide has the running order, and the countdown runs against your own timezone.
4. Mute the spoiler terms before bed on the 18th
A rolling unlock means the opening hours of the story are on social media before large parts of the world can start. Muting GTA 6, GTA VI, Jason and Lucia covers most of it.
Do it the night before rather than the morning after, which is too late by definition.
5. Book the Thursday
Rockstar chose a Thursday, which gives you a launch day and then a weekend. An economist reckons 1.5 million Americans will not be at work that day.
Booking it properly costs nothing and is considerably less stressful than a Friday spent pretending.
6. The optional half
Everything above is genuinely worth doing. The rest is comfort rather than necessity, so treat it that way.
A second controller charged and ready matters more than it sounds for a game people play in long sittings, because a dead pad in the middle of a mission is a real interruption. A headset is the honest upgrade for this particular game, given how much Rockstar has invested in radio and ambient audio. And if your television is doing 60Hz, the performance mode tradeoffs Digital Foundry described are partly wasted on it.
None of that is required. The storage is.
What is not known
The exact install size, whether a day one patch adds to it, and whether preload unlocks at the same hour everywhere. Rockstar has confirmed the dates and nothing more granular.

Where to buy
Make room before 12 November
Estimates put the download at 150 to 200GB and it has to live on internal storage to run. A base PS5 has about 667GB usable, so one or two other big games is all it takes to be short.
Needed before preload opens on 12 November
- Amazon: Must be an M.2 NVMe with a heatsink. A bare drive will not fit the bay.
- Amazon: Xbox uses a proprietary card rather than a standard drive.

Headsets worth it for this one
Rockstar has put a lot into radio and ambient audio, and a soundtrack of roughly twenty identified songs is a poor thing to hear through a television speaker.
