Rockstar put its own biggest secret in a court filing
Arguing that leaking is why it dismissed 34 people, Rockstar had to state in writing what was leaked. It is the first detail of GTA 6 Online the company has ever committed to paper.

Rockstar has never announced Grand Theft Auto 6 Online. No trailer, no feature, no date, not one line about it on the company's own website.
The first detail of it the company has ever put in writing appears in a document defending itself for dismissing the people who talked about it.
The case
In October 2025 Rockstar dismissed 34 staff, 31 in the United Kingdom and 3 in Canada. Rockstar says they shared confidential information on a union Discord server with outsiders, including former employees, competitors and a journalist, and that this caused an irretrievable breakdown in trust.
The workers, backed by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain, say they were dismissed for organising, and allege Rockstar had somebody inside that Discord from as early as February 2024, moving as union membership approached the 10 percent threshold for statutory recognition.
Both accounts are contested. The case has not been decided. Thirty one of the dismissed staff are at a Scottish employment tribunal that began on 10 September and is listed to run until 16 October, five weeks before the game comes out.
What Rockstar had to write down
To establish that the workers had disclosed something that mattered, Rockstar had to say what it was.
From the company's own submission: two discussed an online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time. The same document describes the subject as one of the most closely guarded secrets of the company. Rockstar's Head of Publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, described seeing staff share the online player count as extraordinarily alarming.
What it does not say
This matters, because most of the coverage this month has run the number as though it were an announcement.
| What the filing says | a 32 player format was discussed, and was confidential at the time |
| What it does not say | that Grand Theft Auto 6 ships with 32 players |
It is a description of a conversation inside the company, not a specification of a product. The format could have changed in the years since. It is still the only figure of any kind that has ever come from Rockstar itself about this mode.
And 32 is not a big number
This is the part almost nobody covering the filing has put in context.
Grand Theft Auto Online has run 30 player lobbies since 2013. That figure did not change when the game was rebuilt for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X: the current generation version holds the same number as the PlayStation 3 version did.
So a 32 player format is not a leap. It is, at most, a marginal increase on the architecture Rockstar has already shipped and maintained for thirteen years. Anybody reading the filing as evidence of a radically larger world is reading something that is not there.
What it does suggest is continuity: that whatever was being designed in the period those workers were discussing looked structurally like Grand Theft Auto Online rather than like something new.
Why that is remarkable at all
Because of how little else exists. Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 ships without an online mode at launch and has said nothing about what one would eventually be. There is no announced mode, no announced date and no announced feature.
So the position today is that the company's only public statement of substance about GTA 6 Online is a sentence in an employment tribunal bundle, and it exists because Rockstar had to explain what it was protecting.
Why the silence is strange in the first place
Grand Theft Auto Online is the most commercially important thing Rockstar has ever made. It launched a fortnight after Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013, and Take-Two now describes the majority of its revenue as recurrent consumer spending, most of it from that one mode.
Which makes the blackout around its successor genuinely unusual. Rockstar has published eight character biographies, six regions, a vehicle list and a release date, and has said effectively nothing about the product line that pays for all of it.
That is not an oversight. It is the same policy that has kept the entire voice cast unannounced for three years: Rockstar has never named a single performer in this game.
What happens next
The tribunal is listed to 16 October. Nothing in it changes the game, the date or the price, and an employment case is not where a publisher discusses either.
What it has already done is put a number in public that three years of marketing did not.
