Electric Fang Tattoo

A neon animal head over a Vice City tattoo shop, and the clearest look yet at how appearance customisation works.

Electric Fang Tattoo appears across four images in Rockstar's Ultimate Edition material: a neon frontage with a snarling animal head, and interiors showing work in progress and finished pieces.

What the shots establish

A full back piece on a client standing in front of a mirror. Arm and leg work on another. A client waiting with a phone while an artist works. Flash sheets covering the walls.

That is a process, photographed as a process. Tattoos have been in Grand Theft Auto since San Andreas and have almost always been a menu behind a door. Shooting the session rather than the catalogue suggests something more staged.

Tattoos in the series

San Andreas put tattoo parlours on the map and wired them into the same statistics as the barber and the clothing shop: what you had on your arms counted toward how CJ was received. It was crude, but it meant the parlour had a reason to exist beyond decoration.

Grand Theft Auto V kept the shops and dropped the consequence, and Grand Theft Auto Online turned the catalogue into the product, with tattoos arriving as purchasable content across a decade of updates.

Photographing an artist mid-session, with flash on the walls and somebody waiting their turn, is a different emphasis again. It is the shop as a place rather than the tattoo as an item.

Why it matters mechanically

Tattoos sit in the same layer as the gym and diet system, hair and clothing: things that change how Jason and Lucia look, on a body whose shape is itself variable.

That combination is expensive. Every tattoo has to deform correctly across every body state, for two characters, which is a harder problem than it sounds: ink on a torso that gains and loses weight is a texture stretched over geometry that is not holding still. Rockstar building both systems at once says something about how seriously appearance is being treated.

There is also a possible interaction with the evidence system, where your appearance is something witnesses describe. A visible tattoo is exactly the sort of detail a witness would mention, and unlike a jacket it is not something you can take off between the job and the roadblock.

Rockstar has not commented on any of that, and the connection is an inference rather than a feature.

What is not known

Whether it is one shop or a chain, what the options are, whether tattoos can be removed, whether both characters use the same studio, and whether any of it has an effect beyond how you look.
