How big is the GTA 6 map

Around three times Red Dead Redemption 2 for the state, and roughly twice Los Santos for Vice City alone. One of those numbers matters more than the other.

Two figures circulate and they do very different amounts of work.

The headline is that Leonida is roughly three times the size of the Red Dead Redemption 2 world. The more useful one is that Vice City alone is around twice the size of Los Santos.

Why the headline number is the weaker one

Red Dead Redemption 2's world was deliberately empty. It was a game about distance, weather and the time a horse takes to cross a valley, and the space between things was the point. Tripling that area in a game with cars in it does not triple what is in it.

Map area is also a bad proxy for how large a game feels. Fifty square miles of wetland you cross at forty miles an hour reads as smaller than five square miles of city you have to learn. Anyone who has driven the length of Grand Theft Auto V's map knows it takes a few minutes and most of that is desert.

Why the Vice City number is the one to watch

Dense urban space is the expensive kind to build and the kind players actually spend their hours inside. Los Santos is the busiest city Rockstar has ever made, and doubling it means a place you learn by district rather than by landmark.

That is the number that predicts how the game will feel. It also predicts development cost, which is part of why this game has been in production since 2020 and in early work since 2015.

What makes a map feel big

Rockstar's own history suggests three things do the work, and none of them is area:

  • Vertical variety. Mount Kalaga exists partly because Florida is flat and a map with no elevation reads as small.
  • Terrain that changes how you travel. Wetland needs an airboat, the Keys need a boat, the city needs a car that fits down a street.
  • Density of things worth stopping for. This is where the 600,000 animations and the hand-directed background characters matter more than the square mileage.

What is not known

Rockstar has not published a map, a square mileage, or a road length. Both comparisons above come from previews rather than from a spec sheet, and neither has been stated as a precise multiple. Treat them as the scale Rockstar wants understood rather than as measurements.
