Rockstar wants to turn parts of Miami into Vice City. Local officials are not having it
A pitch to Miami-Dade would rebrand stretches of the airport, the port and the transit system. A commissioner and the county sheriff have already come out against it.

Rockstar has reportedly pitched Miami-Dade County on a real-world marketing campaign that would dress large parts of the city as Vice City ahead of the 19 November launch. The county has confirmed conversations are happening. Nothing has been approved.
What the pitch actually asks for
Reporting on the submitted proposal describes a campaign well beyond billboards:
- Sections of Miami International Airport rebranded, including a Vice City-branded aircraft and a themed baggage claim
- PortMiami carrying installations themed on Port Gellhorn, the faded coastal town in the game
- Metromover cars and Metrorail stations wrapped in game artwork
- Activity at Tropical Park and a celebration built around Miami car culture

The pushback
It has not gone smoothly. Miami-Dade Commissioner JC Bermudez and Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz both publicly opposed the plan, with the sharpest objection aimed at renaming parts of Miami International Airport to Vice City Airport.
The objection is not hard to follow. Grand Theft Auto is a series about crime, and asking a county sheriff to endorse rebranding public infrastructure after a fictional crime capital is a big ask, however good the tourism numbers might look.
Why Rockstar wants it anyway
Vice City is Miami. The whole identity of the game is built on that, and a city willing to play along turns a game launch into a civic event, with every arriving traveller walking through the marketing.
For a studio that markets in rare, enormous gestures rather than sustained campaigns, taking over a city for a fortnight is exactly the shape of thing it would try.
Treat all of this as reported, not decided. Talks are confirmed, the pitch is described in reporting, and two named officials are against it. Whether any of it survives a county commission vote is a different question.
