Ambrosia is the industrial heart of the state, set beside Lake Leonida, with the Allied Crystal sugar refinery standing over it.

It is also where the Thrillbilly Mud Club appears to be located, the venue first shown back in trailer one, which suggests Ambrosia carries a chunk of the game's more unhinged side content.

Sugar is the right industry to pick

The area south of Lake Okeechobee is one of the largest sugar producing regions in the United States, and it is genuinely the industry that runs those towns. It is also an industry with a long and heavily documented history of labour disputes, environmental argument over water running into the Everglades, and enormous political influence for its size.

Choosing sugar rather than a generic factory town gives Rockstar a specific set of things to satirise: an agricultural business with a company town attached, sitting immediately upstream of the wetland region the game has also built.

The lake

Lake Leonida is the Okeechobee analogue. The real lake is enormous, extremely shallow, and ringed by a tall earth dyke built after hurricanes in the twenties killed thousands of people in the towns around it. You cannot see the water from most of the surrounding land because the dyke is in the way. If Rockstar has reproduced that, it is a striking piece of geography: a body of water the size of a county that you have to climb to look at.

The tonal role

Every Grand Theft Auto map needs somewhere for the material that would look absurd in the city. Trailer one's mud club sequence is exactly that, and putting it here confirms Ambrosia as the region where the game gets loud and stupid on purpose.

That is not a criticism. Grand Theft Auto V used Sandy Shores and the surrounding county the same way, and it produced some of the most memorable content in the game.

What is not known

Whether the refinery is enterable, how big Ambrosia is, and what the Thrillbilly Mud Club actually is as an activity have not been confirmed.
