Lucia is the first woman Rockstar has written as a fully voiced lead in a mainline Grand Theft Auto. The first trailer introduces her leaving custody and picking straight back up with Jason.

She is consistently the one pushing. Where Jason reads as somebody managing his situation, Lucia reads as somebody trying to change hers, and the trailers give her the lines that commit the pair to something rather than the lines that hedge.

Why the casting is a series first

Women have been present in Grand Theft Auto from the beginning and almost never in the driving seat. The 3D era gave us Catalina, Misty and a long line of girlfriends, handlers and antagonists, all written from outside. Grand Theft Auto Online has let players build female avatars since 2013, but an avatar is not a character: it has no script, no history and nothing to say.

Lucia is the first time the series has put a written, performed woman at the centre of a mainline story. That is worth stating plainly, because it took twenty-five years and because it changes what kinds of scenes the game can play.

The Bonnie and Clyde framing

Rockstar has leaned on the comparison and the trailers earn it. The pair are introduced as a couple committing crimes together rather than as colleagues, and the character switch interface puts a heart between their two portraits rather than a skill bar.

The obvious risk with the framing is that Bonnie and Clyde stories tend to be about the man with a woman attached. Nothing shown so far reads that way, and Lucia has as much screen time in the marketing as Jason does.

Customisation runs through her

Her screenshots do a lot of the game's customisation work: changing haircuts, piercings, tattoo work, layered clothing including shirts tied at the waist, and jewellery that changes between shots. Rockstar has historically demonstrated appearance systems on whichever character has the most looks, and here that is Lucia.

One shot carries more weight than the rest. The check cashing screenshot shows her pistol with tape wrapped around the grip and a sticker stuck to the body, which is the strongest hint yet at weapon condition being tracked rather than decorative.

What is not known

What she was in custody for has not been stated. Neither has her voice actor, since Rockstar has published no cast list. The trailers imply a history with Jason that predates the game without filling any of it in.
