The Vercetti Estate

Rockstar named it in official copy. Tommy Vercetti was the protagonist of the 2002 game. That is the most direct link yet drawn between the two.

Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition's Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers as coming from the Vercetti Estate, finished with palm-tree etched grips in what the copy calls classic Vice City styling.

Why this is the sentence people noticed

Tommy Vercetti was the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002, and the mansion he takes over across that game is one of the most recognisable locations the series has built.

Rockstar putting the Vercetti name on a location in modern-day Vice City, in its own published marketing rather than as an easter egg somebody froze a trailer to find, is the most direct connection yet drawn between this game and the 1986 one.

What it does and does not mean

It is worth being careful, because a great deal of confident writing about this has already appeared.

  • A named estate is not a returning character. Tommy would be in his eighties.
  • A property can carry a family name for many reasons, most of them undramatic. Estates are named after whoever built them, bought them, or died in them.
  • Rockstar has said nothing else. No footage has been tied to the location.

What can be said is that the studio chose to write the name down, and Rockstar does not do that accidentally. The 1986 game is forty in-universe years in the past, which is exactly the distance at which a name survives as property while the person behind it becomes local history.

The pattern it fits

This is not the only 2002 name to return. Ocean Beach and Washington Beach are both districts carried over from the original Vice City. Rockstar appears to be treating the old city as history the new one is built on top of, rather than as a continuity to reboot.

What is not known

Where the estate is, what it looks like, whether it is enterable, whether it features in the story, and whether the name refers to Tommy Vercetti at all. One sentence of marketing copy is the entire confirmed record.
